Week 1, Part 1/2

This week was all about learning the basics of Blender, a 3D modelling tool used by industry professionals.

The following YouTube tutorial by SirPinkBeard was a great learning resource.

After watching this, I was able to create a nice-looking barrel with a wood texture.

Using the same techniques, I began working on a model of the penguin statue from the town of Penguin, Tasmania. Here are 2 photos that I used for reference.

I thought this would be fairly straightforward after making the barrel, but I did encounter some difficulties. At first the wings were out of proportion to the body, but using Blender's reference image feature allowed me to adjust the model directly on top of the penguin image. My first attempt at applying texture to the model was a disaster as I wasn't able to apply the correct colour to the beak or feet, plus the texture showed signs of tearing and stretching. I knew this was partly due to the techniques used to create the model, so I tried again, this time simplifying the model slightly to allow for easier texturing. After 2 more attempts I was satisfied that I could apply the correct colours to most of the model. Some areas were still difficult to texture properly, in particular the underside of the wings and the backs of the feet, however these are mostly hidden, and they don't look terrible, so were left as they were. Here is the finished model as shown in Blender.

When I finished applying texture to the model, I created a simple scene for the penguin to play a starring role, taking inspiration from the reference photographs.

Overall, I am very happy with the end result. I still want to get the texturing 100%, which might require a redesign of the model. With more practice, I would also like to apply a feather-like texture to the model, so it looks more like an actual penguin rather than just a statue.

I have attached the Blender files for the penguin project. If you would like to try texturing the penguin yourself, feel free to download the mesh file. I would love to hear your thoughts and feedback.
